What we're growing

July 26, 2022

This spring we planted Roma tomatoes, bush green beans, several types of lettuce and peppers, three varieties of cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, birdhouse gourds and loofah sponges. Many of these things we have never grown before, but we are well versed in tomatoes and peppers. This is our third year growing cucumbers.

We battled blossom end rot early on this spring on our tomatoes. As soon as we got that taken care of something started eating them. We suspect deer. We put out repellent and finally got to use some of our tomatoes! Now it is extremely hot, and we are finding ways to battle the heat.

Our green beans are about spent, and I have planted new seeds for a fall crop. We did get about a gallon from the 12 plants we planted this spring.

Our peppers and cucumbers have been producing for several weeks. I've canned many pickles (as well as some spaghetti sauce, some hot mustard chow chow, and a lot of jellies and jams) and dehydrated and froze most of the peppers we have picked. Something new we discovered this year is pickled cool jalapenos. Kevin is loving them!

Our pumpkins, squash, and gourds are just starting to come on strong and we have a few of each of the varieties starting to grow.
