We got a new friend this weekend. We went to visit this girl to decide if we wanted to add her to our herd, thinking she needed to stay with her babies for a few more weeks, but her babies were going to be going to their new homes and she was ready to come home with us. We are already getting more milk from her than we are from our other girl. Her milk doesn't taste quite as good, so for right now I will be separating their milk and using Pepper's only for soap as I try to figure out what is the reason behind that. However, I have currently been using all milk for soap as I get the milk collection process closer to perfection. I am almost there through and should be able to use Libby's milk for us in the kitchen beginning soon. Cali will have her baby (or babies) around the very end of Thanksgiving and then the babies will start sharing Cali's milk with us sometime in December. (Oh! And there is a possibility this sweet girl is bred again in the last few weeks. She and the buck were wandering the yard together a couple of times.)
Chicken Boy goes back to school!

Zach started his Junior year at Lewis County High School this week. He is taking dual enrollment classes through Bethel University and playing football.

Holly got run over by one of the bigger dogs (they're all bigger than her, but that doesn't stop her from being the leader of the pack) and the vet said that what is "the equivalent of her ankle" has three little fractures in it. She may have to be in this splint for a month or two. PRAY FOR US ALL! She is normally high maintenance, but this is extra rough! I can't leave her alone or she tries to remove the splint!!

Yesterday I spent a few hours adding the goat into our original Hens and Sunflowers logo. In consolidating and reimagining this endeavor we are going to use the original Hens and Sunflowers logo, with the goat added, for all of our Salem Hollow facets.
When I created this logo in December, we knew that we were moving to Salem Rd, and that we would have chickens and sunflowers. Goats were still up for discussion.
I had mentioned I would like goats. Kevin said we will have goats. I said we need to think about this and discuss it and how it will impact everything else we do. Kevin said "You want goats. We will have goats."
He never wavered. And we have goats. So, as I was working on things earlier this week, I realized that I needed to add the goat to the logo. I think it turned out well.
A New Day
July 26, 2022
Our homestead journey began six months ago.
Actually, preparing for this life began a lot longer ago than that. We've had small gardens (one or two plants) for many years, and last year we had three different classifications of vegetables and several herbs.
But we bought and moved into our forever home in January 2022.
Since then, we have added sixteen chickens, five goats and a guard dog for the livestock. We also are growing a fairly large garden (in comparison to our former attempts) and have a nice little greenhouse (which it is way too hot to use in the midst of this current heat wave).
I've been juggling this little mini-farm (or hobby farm - I'm not sure which term I prefer yet), kids, taking care of another mini-farm for the owners who don't live there and trying to figure everything out as I go. I've got three websites, as well as three Instagram accounts and three Facebook accounts which correlate with the websites.
As of now, I am going to try to consolidate everything I can (here), and put away anything that doesn't fit in. I welcome you to follow us on this journey.
Farmers' Market Day
March 29, 2022
The first farmers' market of the year is behind us and was a success! Tuesday was a lot of fun at the Hampshire Farmers' Market in Hampshire, TN. I can't wait until next week!
Also this week, on Monday, we started offering a new shea butter soap. Chocolate Mint Shea Butter Soap Bar is awesome! My kids are even enjoying it and they're boys! A very smooth and soft bar filled with shea butter and smelling like a favorite treat, the ingredients include real Hershey's cocoa as well as peppermint essential oil.

I attended the vendors' meeting today for the Hampshire Farmers' Market in Hampshire, TN. Our first market day will be on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 from 3pm until dark. There will be a variety of items including plants, beef, salsas and jellies, handmade items galore and of course Salem Hollow products. Make plans to stop by!
February 11, 2022
We have recently moved to Salem Road near the unincorporated area of Salem, Tennessee. With this new move we are starting over again...kind of. Some of us are staying in the same groove that got us here. Others are rebranding and expanding.
I am rebranding and expanding. I am going back in time to a time that was simpler and healthier. With this move, we are planning on a small hobby farm or homestead which will fit nicely into my handmade world. I am going back to basics.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art (general). General because I love all art and refused to choose between painting, drawing, photography, jewelry making, sculpture, graphic design, etc. All of those classes were part of my education. I just refused to limit myself to any one of them to obtain a BFA.
This rebranding is going to revisit that time when I loved all things art and did it for the love and joy of it. Too often recently, the money side of my work has taken precedence. While I still hope to sell my creations, it will not be the driving force behind what I do. Hopefully, my new life will also revisit a time when I was always outside and making something because it was fun; a time when my cousin asked me "What do you want to be when you grow up?" and I said "An artist".
I welcome you to join me on this journey. I can't wait to see where this path leads...
